TOELICHTING
Water garden
There are several public gardens in the Spijkerkwartier-district in Arnhem. These offer the opportunity for nature to develop in quiet peace. The Water Garden, or Watertuin in Dutch, is one of those gardens, a true urban oasis. Thanks to the maintenance and the two large ponds, the garden offers shelter to representatives from all animal kingdoms and more than 350 plant species.
In our work we have been inspired by the past and present of this place and the contradictions that lie in its usage over time. On the ever so green and fertile piece of estate, a printing house was established, which made the place polluted. The drawings with ballpoint pen refer to that contradiction. The figuration for example, refers to the organic character of the place now, and the ink to the printing house.
With the reproduction it contains the cyanotype technique applied in the large work refers to the printing company. The reproduction consists of historical drawings and floor plans of the place and parts of the ballpoint drawings inspired by the now of the place. Also the cyanotype technique, in which UV light touches a photosensitive cloth that is stenciled and thus discolors in two ways (with and without light) and thus creates an image on the fabric combined in the creation a natural element (UV) light from the sun) and a polluting element (photosensitive paper / chemical process).
About 25 years ago, a group of local residents took the initiative to restore the garden and its contaminated soil. After much effort from the residents and volunteers, the Watertuin regained its welcoming and inviting character, for people and animals.
Our work is therefore an ode to the initiators and volunteers who have maintained this garden in the past or are still doing so.

Watertuin
